The Paleo Diet and Snacking

The Paleo Diet and Snacking

After an 8 day break from the Paleo Diet (I was experimenting with another diet - it didn't go too well), I am back. I focus once again on meats, vegetables, fruits, coconuts, and a few nuts here and there. It's a good thing I like game meats like venison (which is abundant around here) to vary it up...I'd even like to try alligator one of these days.

I'm rereading Loren Cordain's book, The Paleo Diet, and have just started Robb Wolf's The Paleo Solution. Turns out Robb was a vegetarian for years, and he tells about how it really messed him up. All those grains and tofu...glad I never went there.

One thing that can be tricky is finding good paleo snacks. The site Pale Diet Lifestyle (http://paleodietlifestyle.com/paleo-snacks/) has a great page on this. They recommend a fruit salad, a smoothie, an egg muffin, some olives, a piece of beef jerkey, a little dark chocolate, among many other ideas.

How to Make Coconut Milk from Shredded Coconut

I personally like to make coconut milk smoothies. I did recently read on Chris Kresser's site however that canned coconut milk is not the best idea because of the added guar gum (which is apparently hard to digest for many) and bpa from the can lining. So I ordered some bags  of shredded coconut and make my own milk. It's pretty easy. Pour some in a blender, pour twice as much hot water in there and let soak for a minute, then blend and strain through a cheese cloth. Tastes good to me, and I like cutting out the middleman when it's easy to do so (middleman being bpa-filled, non-organic, expensive store-bought canned coconut milk).

The next type of snack I'm going to try from paleodietlifestyle.com: a blueberry cucumber smoothie recipe. Great way to get your cucumbers (which I usually don't)!
